| Alcamo
(“alquam”, muddy land, or “marzil alqamah”,
Alqamah’s farmhouse) was founded in the tenth century by Arabs.
In origin it was built at the foot of Mount Bonifato, which was
inhabited by Christians. The ruins of a tower and an old tank of
water (called Funtanazza), testify the art of the period. Alcamo
is the native country of the poet Ciullo or Cielo d’Alcamo,
who wrote the well-known “Rosa fresca aulentissima”
(1300). Nowadays, Alcamo is famous for its wine industry, whose
production is renowned in international commerce of vintage wines.
